Science of Play

Sloomoo is all about the power of play.

It has been scientifically proven to boost stress relief, strengthen relationships, and improve focus, decision making skills, and self regulation. Play is vital for everyone, not just kids.

We collaborated with the National Institute for Play, a nonprofit dedicated to the science of play, to understand the benefits. In the age of screen culture, play is a recipe for mental wellness, no matter your age. “Play paves the way for a healthy, more vibrant future,” says Dr. Stuart Brown, the NIFP founder.

The benefits:

Sloomoo's Research Study

Play boosts creativity and better relationships, especially amongst teams in the workplace.

We conducted a study with the research firm, GoodQues, and gave slime to adults. We found the following:

75%

felt that playing with slime has a positive impact on their workday

75%

said slime increased their communication skills

75%

reported that slime improved their connections with their peers

65%

were more relaxed after slime play

Slime & Occupational Therapy
Slime goes beyond the role of a toy.

We collaborated with Los Angeles based Play 2 Progress, a leading pediatric occupational therapy clinic, specializing in sensory integration.

Co-Founder Allie Ticktin, author of Play to Progress: Lead Your Child to Success Using the Power of Sensory Play, shared insights on the benefits of slime.

Exposure to a variety of textures

With so many types of textures, you can use different slimes to engage and explore all the feels. Start with beginner slimes that don’t get sticky (cloud, cloud dough) and then see how kiddos react to more advanced types (butter, then thick and glossy, and clear).

Improve fine motor skills

Hide things (like beads) in slime so kiddos carefully pick each one out. Also, manipulating and kneading slime is a great way to strengthen hand muscles that are used in fine motor tasks.

Support attention

Slime is a great tool to support a child’s attention. Play 2 Progress calls slime a “body tool” rather than a toy because it’s a tool that supports a child’s regulation and it’s important for kids to understand what helps them regulate. A little trick: Give your kiddos slime in dime sized pieces rather than the full container when you are using it as a body tool.

Bilateral coordination

This one might surprise you, but pulling, kneading and mixing slime requires the use  of both hands together, which is bilateral coordination.

Proprioceptive input

Did you know that we have 8 (yes, 8!) senses and not just 5? One of those hidden senses is called the proprioceptive sense, which helps us understand where we are in space. Proprioceptive input is really calming and grounding for the body. Slimes with dense and resistive textures (cloud dough) provide this proprioceptive input.

Executive functioning

Making slime is not only fun but it also requires many steps and a variety of skills including problem solving, flexibility, working memory, emotional regulation and attention, all of which are executive functioning skills.

Creativity

How many different ways can slime be used? What can you add to slime or how can you change the texture? The options are unlimited, makes it a great way to support a child’s creativity. Don’t forget to let them really explore.

Social Play

What is more fun than a slime party or making slime with a group of friends! Slime is a great way for children to connect with each other and build friendships.

Allie is an occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration.

Allie is the founder of Play 2 Progress and the author of the book, Play to Progress: Lead Your Child to Success Using the Power of Sensory Play, published by Tarcher Perigee at Penguin Random House.

Allie uses the science of child development and the joy of play to boost children’s confidence and enhance development within all areas of their lives, from social and emotional to physical and academic. Allie believes that the best way to support children is to arm their parents, from inception, with the knowledge and skills necessary to encourage their children’s development for success through childhood and beyond.
